Reckoning T-Shirt Design
The Life Project is a platform for storytelling and documentaries of people’s lives, from many different cities up and down California and the UK. The Life Project was looking to have a t-shirt to sell on their tour of several different cities, as well as to support their travel and to aid homeless shelters. They wanted the message of their tour to be symbolically represented through this t-shirt, and be able to have this t-shirt be a physical reminder of their tour message. They decided that the word Reckoning would be used for the design as it fit their overall message best.
The message of their tour that they wanted to be represented was the “solemn” nature of many emotionally difficult stories being told from the homeless, as well as having a “happy” tone to represent the sensation of hope. It was decided that this would be best achieved by the lively nature of an edgy, yet smooth script approach to the lettering, and contrasting that with lowercase letters, having rounded corners to keep the word from being overpowering.
With their target audience for these shirts being young adults, I identified the opportunity to implement a current design trend that many successful products solicited to young adults incorporate geometric shapes in certain aspects of design. I decided that the use of inverted lettering in the middle of a circle would serve the interests of the audience best. The circle was also a way to contain and soften the excitement of the type, while creating that solemn tone with the addition of the color blue. The circle was also considered as a way to give substance to a message that will be printed to the size of a t-shirt, being able to have a visible message from various distances.
