My Design Process
When it comes to design, I do things a bit differently than you might expect. The following is a look into my process on a practical level so I may explain how I work. For starters, I strive to provide you the best design solution for your project, which is why I provide a design solution instead of options. With that in mind, here’s how my design process looks from beginning to end.
Before I take on a project, I require a minimum of 4 weeks from the time of initial contact to complete a given project. Here’s the a time-specific breakdown of a project:
1st week: We will thoroughly discuss the needs and goals for your project, as well as the unique challenges that your project presents. After our preliminary discussions, I will create a project proposal, write up a contract for the project, and send an invoice for the initial down payment.
2nd week: As soon as I receive the down payment and signed contract, I will begin work on your project. I will spend the second week of the project exploring a wide range of possible concepts.
3rd week: I will use the third week to narrow my focus towards crafting your logo or lettering piece from the single best design concept. This is chosen based on your goals for the project established in the preliminary discussions. By the end of the third week, I will have finalized the piece for your project.
4th week: The final week will be used to thoroughly refine the piece. Finally, I will craft a process manual, usage guide, and then present the final product to you. The deliverables will be sent over to you immediately after the final payment is received.
At the end of each week, you will receive an update on the progress of the project. The final update will be the presentation of the final product followed by the payment & delivery.
The following is a step-by-step breakdown of my process:
When I take on a project, the first thing I will do is start with the information you have submitted in the questionnaire on my hire me page. I will spend time gaining an understanding of what you’re looking for through the initial information you’ve provided to me. We will then proceed to clarify your goals, needs, and expectations through further discussions.
As the expert in your industry, I will expect you to provide the content and goals for the project. Within our preliminary discussions, I will defer to you for anything pertaining to insight on your customers or clients, as well any market research you might have.
Likewise, I will be responsible for the design decisions. I will craft a solution with the content you’ve provided, and to achieve the goals you’ve established. It is my goal to provide you with the best solution possible, and that requires you to have trust in my knowledge and expertise in design.
Once the necessary information has been provided and the project goals have been clearly defined, I will send over a few documents:
- A project proposal outlining the specifics of the project, as well as an overview of the agreed upon terms. It will include time frame for the project, line item description of each feature, and the cost of each feature with a payment schedule.
- A contract for the design project. The contract will be a reiteration of the project proposal, and is expected to be signed and sent back to me if the project proposal is agreed upon
- An invoice for the down payment of the project. The invoice will by for the agreed upon initial payment and is expected to be paid in full before I begin working on the project.
The project will begin upon receiving the down payment and signed agreement. The down payment is due upon receipt, and the project will not begin until the invoice has been paid. In the case that the down payment has not been paid within seven days, the project will lose priority status and will need to be renegotiated.
I begin most projects by spending the initial part of each project familiarizing myself with the target audience and goals for the project. Then, I spend time understanding the relationships between the two, and identify the unique challenges that the project poses. I start the design process by creating numerous concepts, which will get narrowed down to a single concept that serves the project goals best.
I require a minimum of 4 weeks from the time of initial contact to complete a given project. At the end of each week, you will receive an update on the progress of the project. The final update will be the presentation of the final product followed by the payment & delivery.
I will continue to refine that concept until I reach a final refined sketch. Depending on the type of project, the preparation for the output format will vary. For most logo work, the final sketch will then be converted to a finalized drawing. I will then scan the piece into the computer where I will convert the piece into digitized, vector artwork. This will give you the original artwork at it’s highest quality, and allow it to be adapted to many different mediums without losing quality. Depending on your needs, I may include additional files and raster images.
Once the project is completed, I will send you an email with a presentation of my intentional design decisions that cumulatively informed the finished product. If there is any amount of money remaining to be paid, I will send you an invoice for the final project payment at the same time.
The final payment is due upon receipt, and the deliverables will not be sent until the invoice has been paid. In the case that the final payment has not been paid within seven days, the project will incur an additional 20% late fee with each additional week that the payment is late. As soon as the final payment has been processed, I will send you the deliverable files, process guide, and usage guide.
